Dangerlust
by Pete Mella

On the eve of Dangerlust's debut gig, L2SB catches up with some familiar faces from the Sheffield scene...

Dangerlust are a new band named after a b-side by the Wildhearts, a band guitarist Mikey has seen no fewer than eleven times. During the course of the interview the rest of the band ask him "why have we got such a sh*t name?" However it could be a lot worse - singer/guitarist Rachel wanted the band to be called Donkey Crisis.

You may recognise three quarters of the band, as Rachel, Mikey and bassist Tony were in the fantastically twee bubblegum punk outfit Floater UK, a band that gigged their arses off round Sheffield a few years ago before disbanding.

A distinct lack of tweeness is promised in Dangerlust, which Mikey desbribes as: "Wildhearts meet Josie and the Pussycats".

"Were trying to rock more," says Rachel, "though It's very hard to go rock with a female singer." She corrects herself. "Actually that's bollocks cos Josie and the Pussycats managed it!"

The line up is completed by drummer Paul, who the band found in "the family tree" (he's Rachel's cousin). Originally from Farnborough, a move to Manchester ensured his place in the Dangerlust fold.

So what was the inspiration for this reformation of old musical allies?

"I was sick of going to gigs and seeing very bad bands, not saying any in particular," says Mikey. "It seems that last time we were in a band, there were many more good bands in Sheffield. And there are less now."

"But the ones that are good now are far better than the ones that were around then," chips in Tony.

"This is true!,"admits Mikey, "but I just saw a load of bands and thought I could do a lot better."

"Mikey, you big-headed c*nt!," exclaims Rachel.

"That's a bit harsh!," laughs Paul.

"Sorry, I was going to say 'cock' but I don't like that word!"

The bands that Mikey and the rest of Dangerlust do actually enjoy locally are Chuck, The Motherf*ckers and Texas Pete ("funny how they all have Mitch drumming," muses Tony), as well as Special Moth and 65 Days of Static. The band are keen to escape the confines of the city, though, with their forthcoming mini tour which takes in Sheffield (at the Casbah), Manchester and Huddersfield.

"Our original plan was to do one gig, and see how it went, and if it was worth carrying on," says Rachel, "but now we're playing three."

"It's a lot easier these days because there's cars involved," says Mikey, "It used to be a military operation trying to do a gig outside Sheffield. It's now as easy to do a gig outside Sheffield as it is to do a gig inside Sheffield. So we thought we might as well."

They've checked with Ginger and he doesn't mind them using the name, and has even told them to crib as many Wildhearts riffs as they want ("and we have," grins Mikey). One day Huddersfield, then the world? Dangerlust aren't planning that far, but it wouldn't surprise us one little bit.
