Get Me To The World On Time
by Pete Mella

L2SB pop down to one of Sheffield's most eclectic clubs, and see in the launch of the Motherf*ckers' debut single.

Sick of the same old guitar tunes cycled again and again and again? It might be time to get yourself to Get Me To The World One Time, the Sheffield night that dusts down some old classics and gives them a spin, as well as showcasing some new live talent.

The night is a “secret”, invite-only affair, the first Friday of every month at The Point. It’s named after a song by 60s garage band The Electric Prunes, which gives a good indication of the music on offer, as well as a bit of Rock 'n' Roll, Punk, Mod, Freakbeat, Psych and modern indie. An eclectic mix all round.

And as a hors d'oeuvre, the night serves up two garage-influenced live acts. These have included local acts such as the Special Agents, Beachbuggy, Texas Pete and Chuck, and out of town acts including Les Flames and the Real Losers.

The night’s founder and DJ, Mark Benn, explains the night’s ethos:

“This whole thing began when I and a friend were sitting at home listening to the Nuggets album. As we were both sitting there we realised just how good all this stuff is and then the idea of a club cropped up as part of our drunken conversation. I thought it was a brilliant idea, and hence now here is the night.”

“I think the main idea behind it is that there is some good stuff out there that you won't hear played at Brighton Beach, The Leadmill or the Fuzz Club, and we are hear to give it the airing it deserves.”

Tonight sees the launch of the Motherf*ckers’ debut 7” ‘I’m a f*cker’, a cracking slice of psychobilly-surf-rock on extra-thick blood red vinyl. Support comes from London’s The Hotwires, a great band that shows some great Fall-type shonkiness combined with studied rock cool.

The Mofo’s themselves take to the stage, looking like a Vegas lounge band that have just been possessed by the devil. This is a band obsessed with 60s garage rock, Hammer Horror and, quite obviously, swearing like navvies. Few bands can actually manage to be simultaneously comedic, sleazy and sinister, and the Mofos manage to pull it off. Fantastic stuff.

As well as Mark, the night is co-DJed by the delightfully 50’s-styled Amy, and guest DJs that have included the Motherf*ckers’ Steve Peto, Lizzie Rowe and Jerome Smith, and Penny Blackham from Velodrome 2000 and GG Action.

Mark says: “We quite like keeping as large amount of DJ's as possible just because it keeps the night interesting and diverse for the crowd. There's nothing more dull, I think, than returning to the same club week after week and knowing that at 12:50 ‘Last Night’ by the Strokes is going to be played - not mentioning any clubs in particular!”

And at one of the most eclectic nights in Sheffield, predictability is definitely not on the menu.
