| By: Pete... December 6, 2002 11:50am Barfly Sheffield died with less than a bang but a whimper on the 5th Dec. Scheduled to have the fantastic electronica band Ladytron as their final act, punters turned up to find the venue had closed early and the gig was cancelled. Ladytron pulled out of the show at the last minute, which probably had something to do with the fact they were featuring Live on Radio One at midnight the same night. The club was originally housed in the National Centre for Popular Music. The Barfly group has several successful venues across the country, in London, Cardiff, Glasgow and Liverpool, and it was actually thought it could be a serious rival to the Leadmill. The truth, however, was a venue with mediocre turn-outs and, in recent months, early start times and gig cancellations. After NCPM went tits up for the millionth time, Barfly found a new home at Club Zero on Matilda Street, but has now been forced to shut down for the time being, possibly for good. Yet another Sheffield venue closed, and despite its pitfalls one that will be missed. It was a fine venue for medium-sized bands (both at NCPM and Club Zero), and a place where local acts could play a stage larger than a postage stamp. It's also another nail in the 'where the hell does anyone play in this city any more?' coffin.
| | Less Than Zero line-up shake-up |
| By: Pete... December 6, 2002 11:27pm Less Than Zero have amicably lost two of its members in the form of guitarist Al Machine and drummer Jeff Metal. All this, of course, means Jeff Metal (aka Paul) can concentrate on his side project 36 Other Guys. Imagine Tenacious D meets Vic and Bob and you're about there.
| | Pulp Hits misses |
| By: Pete... December 6, 2002 11:18pm Pulp's greatest hits package has reached a disappointing number 71 in the album charts. This is despite universal rave reviews and the fact it's bloody fantastic. The album, their last on Island records and speculated to be the band's swansong, features nearly all singles since 1992's 'Babies', as well as new track 'Last Day of the Miner's Strike'. A DVD of the album, featuring all the band's videos to date and exclusive material, is out on 9th Dec. Pulp will also be playing the Auto festival at Rotherham's Magna centre on 14th Dec, along with Royksopp, The Bees, Lemon Jelly and many others. The one day event was masterminded by Jarvis Cocker and Steve Mackey, and is, again, much rumoured to be the band's last ever gig. Sniff. [link]
