Jody Wildgoose has a new album on the way.

The acclaimed singer/songwriter releases 'Afterlife' through Sketchbook Records on March 6th. It's described on the Sketchbook website as a "more focused and realised affair" than his debut, 'Lovely White Teeth'.

For a preview, Jody will be playing songs from the album at a free gig at the Green Room tomorrow (23rd), with Neil McSweeny and Tim Pare. [link]

The night will be the final Electric Blanket at the Mappin Street venue, and will feature Printed Circuit, Smokers Die Younger, Hot Snack, and DJ duties from Rough Disko and Go Johnny Go Go Go Go.

The Blind Institute will eventually be demolished and replaced with even more sodding flats.

Electric Blanket's £3avd/£4door, and BYOB as always. [link]

Hawley single and South Bank Show nomination
By: Pete... January 21, 2006 5:29pm
Richard Hawley has a new single out next week, and has been nominated for a South Bank Show award.

The singer releases 'Just Like The Rain' on Monday, backed with new tracks 'Room With A View' and 'Long Black Veil'.

Meanwhile, Hawley's 'Coles Corner' album has been nominated for ITV artfest The South Bank Show's awards, under the best pop category. He's up against the likes of Kate Bush and Gorillaz, and we'll find out when the awards ceremony is broadcast on Friday 27th January.

In other Hawley-related news, the good people of his web forum are staging a gig on 10th February at the Boardwalk, in aid of Sheffield Children's Hospital. Each act will perform a cover of one of his song, and there's even a pair of Hawley's jeans for one lucky winner... for details visit here [link].

Bromheads Jacket are launching NME's new night at the Plug next week.

Club NME takes place on Monday (23rd), which also features, bizarelly, Lethal Bizzle. The night is weekly, and future nights will include live sets from the likes of Envelopes, Shout Out Louds, Jamie T and This Et Al.

 Vote Harrisons!
By: Pete... January 21, 2006 5:14pm
Harrisons are up for the vote on the MTV2 video chart.

The band's new video is a tribute to Ken Loach's Barnsley-based falcon-fancying classic Kes. It features actor Steve Edge, who has had roles in Phoenix Nights, Mike Bassett and Peep Show, as the sadistic PE teacher. The vid accompanies the band's new single, 'Blue Note'/'Shirley's Temple', which is out on 13th Feb on Melodic Records.

You can vote for the video here [link], and watch it here [link].

Arctics for top spot an chart statistic madnes
By: Pete... January 21, 2006 5:00pm
Arctic Monkeys look set for another number one hit tomorrow, and their debut album is tipped to be the fastest selling rock debut of all time.

'When The Sun Goes Down' looks set to be the first, and possibly only, song about Neepsend prostitutes to make the top spot. And pre-orders of the album 'Whatever You Say I Am, That's What I'm Not', which is out on Monday, suggest demand may outstrip the previous record-holder for a debut, Oasis's 'Definitely Maybe' in 1994. It is estimated the Arctics may shift 200,000 copies in the first week.

The band play a gig at The Leadmill on Sunday, as a warm up for their gig on the NME tour.

 UKOA get Wasted
By: Pete... January 21, 2006 4:55pm
United Kingdom of America have been chosen to play Blackpool's Wasted Festival.

The fest takes place between 10th-13th August at Blackpool's Winter Gardens, and features a host of punk luminaries, including The Damned, Hugh Cornwell, Slaughter & The Dogs, UK Subs, Bad Manners, The Vibrators, 999 and Peter & The Test Tube Babies.

The band also have their first London gig lined up... not bad for an outfit conceived as a side project by Ecanasia's Laurence Landau.

 Balors/Scarlets on Thee SPC
By: Pete... January 21, 2006 4:51pm
They're busy at the moment, are those Sheffield Phonographic types... if the MSTU album wasn't enough, the label are about to release a split single of Scarlet Tuesday and Balor Knights.

The single features Scarlets track 'A Perfect Quarter' and Balors track 'Just Cos Keenan Said So', and will be released on yellow vinyl on 6th Feb.

In other SPC news, issue four of Thee Humbug is out on 24th January, and features Umlaut, The Yell, Forward Russia and many more bands and no doubt much cod-Victorian tomfoolery.

 Kik in the studio
By: Pete... January 21, 2006 4:47pm
Those glamorous souls Kik are in the studio recording their debut album.

The Sheffield band, favourites on Kerrang! Radio, have most of the tracks down, and already talking about working on the follow up.

They're also performing live for the first time since last April, at a gig with Fucshia on 3rd March at the Boardwalk, and before that can be seen before that DJing at Tainted at DnR Live on 27th Jan.
